State Counsels Plays Vital Role In Dispensation Of Justice, 107 Prosecutors Train, Attorney General

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kano State, Barrister Abdlkarim Kabir Maude, has said that State Prosecutors remains the engine room of a sound and quick delivery of Justice and Justice reforms.

This is even as the Kano State Branch of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN) successfully trained 107 State Prosecutors to enhance effective service delivery in the administration of criminal justice across the state.

Speaking at the opening of a training workshop for 107 Kano Counsel, the Attorney-General of Kano State, Abdulkarim Kabir Maude SAN
represented by Aminu Hussein, Special Adviser to the Governor on Constitutional Matters reaffirmed the commitments the Kano State Government to strengthening the justice system through continuous professional development of its law officers.

He commended the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kano Chapter, for organizing the program.

He noted that state counsel play a vital role in safeguarding the rule of law, defending public interest, and ensuring government actions remain anchored on fairness and legality. In his words, “continuous capacity development is no longer optional, it is imperative.”

He added that the welfare and growth of justice sector workers remain a priority for the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, stressing that motivated and competent professionals are essential for an effective justice system.

He urged participants to embrace the training with dedication, reminding them that justice is a public trust and that their competence directly strengthens public confidence in governance.

In his address Chairman of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kano State Branch, Barrister Abdullahi Aminu Shams, stressed the need for continuous training and improved welfare for law officers to strengthen criminal justice delivery in the state.
He described the programme as “a landmark initiative and the first of its kind organized by LOAN in Kano.”

He noted that while the association had taken the initiative to organize the training, the responsibility for continuous professional development rests with government. “This intervention by the Association should be viewed as a complementary effort aimed at supporting Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional capacity within the Ministry of Justice,” he said.

The LOAN Chairman commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the recruitment of 70 state counsel, calling it “the largest single employment of law officers in the history of Kano State.”

He however appealed for more government support, including better office accommodation, welfare packages, and conducive working conditions to boost morale and efficiency.

According to the chairman, participants will be trained on practical aspects of criminal litigation such as drafting charges, handling objections, plea bargaining, restorative justice, and prosecution in Magistrate and Shari’a courts.

He urged them to take full advantage of the sessions, stressing that “investing in the continuous training and retraining of law officers is indispensable to enhancing prosecutorial standards and strengthening public confidence in the justice system.”

The Solicitor General of Kano State, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, described the ongoing capacity-building workshop for 107 law officers as a “golden opportunity” that must be fully utilized.

Tahir stressed that prosecution is a serious responsibility requiring diligence and continuous legal education.

He commended the Law Officers Association of Nigeria (LOAN), Kano Branch, for initiating the programme, assuring that the Ministry of Justice is committed to supporting similar efforts aimed at strengthening criminal justice delivery in the state.

He maintained that the workshop focuses on developing skilled prosecutors for effective criminal justice delivery, is expected to lay the foundation for regular professional development programmes for law officers in Kano State.

“This training is a golden opportunity for you. Prosecution is serious-minded business, and continuous learning is essential for effective service delivery,” he stated.

Some participants expressed gratitude to LOAN, noting that the workshop would help them become more conversant with legal processes after their graduation from law school.
