NUJ Jigawa Removes Correspondents’ Chapel Chairman Over Political Ambition

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has removed the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Zangina Mohammed Kura, from office with immediate effect over his alleged exit from journalism and involvement in partisan politics.

The Council announced the decision in a statement issued on Saturday by its Chairman, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse.

According to the statement, the action followed complaints and what it described as credible evidence showing that Kura had left active journalism practice and was currently contesting for the position of member representing Kura/Garin Malam State Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Council said the decision was in line with provisions of the NUJ Constitution, particularly Articles 5, 7 and 8, dealing with professional ethics, disciplinary measures and sanctions against conduct capable of bringing the union into disrepute.

It noted that partisan political participation by a serving union official compromises the neutrality, integrity and professional standards expected of members of the journalism profession.

The statement further recalled resolutions of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ which require members involved in partisan politics or political appointments to relinquish their union positions to preserve the union’s non-partisan status.

Consequently, the council directed Kura to immediately hand over all official duties, records, documents and properties of the Correspondents’ Chapel to the Vice Chairman pending further directives.

It warned that failure to comply with the directive would lead to referral to the union’s Ethics and Disciplinary Committee for additional action under the NUJ Constitution.

The council also advised ministries, departments and agencies, civil society organisations, security agencies and the general public to stop recognising or dealing with Zangina Mohammed Kura in his former capacity as Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel.

The NUJ Jigawa State Council reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, ethical journalism, neutrality and adherence to the constitutional principles of the union.
