Kano Lawyer Leads Awareness Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence in Ungogo

A Kano-based legal practitioner, Barrister Sani Ammani, has taken the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) directly to the grassroots, holding an awareness campaign in Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State.

The event which was organised by Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN) and hosted at Darul Kiran wa Sunnah, aimed to educate community members on the dangers of GBV and the legal protections available to victims.

Speaking during the campaign, Barrister Ammani noted that GBV is not just a social issue but a violation of fundamental rights. “I broke down what GBV is, what fuels it, how it ruins lives, and what the law says to protect women and girls,” he explained.

He highlighted key legal frameworks including the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law and the Child Protection Law, stressing that while these rights exist on paper, many communities remain unaware of them.

The session was marked by moments of deep reflection. “What stayed with me was not the question. It was the silence before the questions. That pause where something lands,” Ammani noted, describing the impact of the discussions on participants.

The campaign ended with a free legal clinic, where residents sought guidance on issues affecting them. According to Ammani, the turnout stressed the urgent need for accessible legal knowledge and justice in underserved communities. “Ignorance of the law is not neutral. It costs people, mostly women and girls, their safety, their dignity, and sometimes their lives,” he warned.

Checks Naija gathered that Community members expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a rare opportunity to understand their rights and seek legal redress.

The campaign is part of ongoing efforts to curb GBV in Kano State by bridging the gap between legal protections and public awareness.
