Hadejia Emirate: A Centenary History of Hadejia Resistance to Colonial Invasion—1906 2026

The Hadejia Emirate has announced plans to host a major commemorative event marking 120 years since the historic 1906 war between the people of Hadejia and British colonial forces, a defining moment widely regarded as a cornerstone of the region’s history.

The event will be held under the leadership of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Dr. Adamu Abubakar Maje Haruna, CON, on behalf of the entire emirate.

Speaking to journalists, the Galadiman Hadejia, Alhaji Usman Abdul’aziz, said the gathering is not merely ceremonial but aims to honour the bravery and sacrifices of the forebears who resisted colonial domination in defence of their land and dignity.

He noted that the commemoration will also serve as an opportunity to educate the public, particularly younger generations, on the significance of preserving history and drawing lessons from past struggles.

According to him, key activities lined up include academic sessions focusing on the 1906 conflict, where scholars and historians will present research papers examining the causes, course, and long-term impact of the war on Hadejia and the wider region.

The programme is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 24, 2026, with special prayers and visits to historical sites, including the graves of those who lost their lives in the conflict, in remembrance of their sacrifices.

Activities will continue on Saturday, April 25, with a series of academic lectures at the main auditorium of the Hadejia School of Engineering and Midwifery, where notable scholars such as Professor Samaila Suleiman, Professor Shehu Tijjani Yusuf, and Dr. Junaidu Danlami are expected to speak on the historical relevance of the war and the importance of heritage preservation.

The event will culminate in a grand Durbar (traditional horse parade) led by the Emir of Hadejia, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and enduring traditions of the emirate.

Galadiman Abdul’aziz emphasised that the commemoration is expected to strengthen unity and mutual understanding among the people while projecting Hadejia’s history to a wider global audience.
