The Labour Subcommittee of the Kano Taskforce Committee on Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) has intensified its advocacy campaign by engaging leaders of the organised labour movement to mobilise workers across the state to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Speaking during the sensitisation meeting, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kano State Council, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, reaffirmed the commitment of Kano workers to ensuring the success of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
He described the cordial relationship between organised labour and the Kano State Government as encouraging, noting that the partnership would further enhance citizens’ participation in the democratic process.
Comrade Inuwa urged workers to fulfil their civic responsibility by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that the PVC remains the legitimate instrument through which citizens elect leaders of their choice.
Earlier, the Secretary of the labour Sub-committee, Comrade Usman Bello, highlighted the importance of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise in deepening democracy and expanding citizens’ participation in governance.
Comrade Bello, a former Secretary of the Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), announced that arrangements had been concluded to facilitate the registration of workers and their family members at a designated registration centre located at the Ministry of Information from Monday, June 29 to Friday, July 4.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Labour Subcommittee, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, described voter registration as both a civic duty and a democratic responsibility.
He disclosed that the subcommittee had developed effective strategies to mobilise workers across the state, ensuring that no eligible voter is left behind.
Comrade Ibrahim reminded participants that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise will end on July 10, after which the display of the voters’ register for claims and objections will commence. He therefore appealed to all eligible citizens, particularly workers and their families, to take advantage of the remaining days to register or update their voter records.
The meeting ended with an interactive question and answer session, during which participants expressed their readiness to support the mobilisation campaign and encourage greater participation in the voter registration exercise.
