The NUJ National Trustee, Zone A, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has resigned to contest for the position of Deputy Governor of Kano State on the platform of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC).

In statement circulated to Journalists on Tuesday, Comrade Abbas said he took the decision to enable him to devote adequate time and energy to this new responsibility and actively participate in the political process.

“Dear Comrades, with a deep sense of humility, gratitude and comradeship, I wish to inform you that, having emerged as the repositioned Labour Party Deputy Governorship Candidate for Kano State, I have decided to resign my position as NUJ National Trustee, Zone A, to enable me devote adequate time and energy to this new responsibility and actively participate in the political process.

“This decision did not come lightly. I have taken time for sincere self reflection and concluded that, at this stage of my journey, I must respond to the calls to participate more directly in politics and contribute my quota towards building a better society.

“I believe that journalism, trade unionism and politics, though different platforms, are all avenues through which we can serve humanity, defend justice, promote the interests of the people and contribute to the development of our society.

“I am therefore stepping into this new responsibility with the same spirit of service, courage, commitment and comradeship that has guided my years in the NUJ and the labour movement,” he
said.

He said he had already conveyed the decision at the NUJ National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting held in Dutse,Jigawa State,on Tuesday, 11th August 2026.

“As I take this new step, I humbly seek your prayers, goodwill and support. I remain your comrade, colleague and brother, and I sincerely hope that the bonds of comradeship built over the years will continue to endure, irrespective of the different paths we may take.

“I wish to express my profound appreciation to the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, and the entire NEC and indeed my chairman Comrade Suleiman Dederi and his team for the confidence reposed in me and for giving me the opportunity to serve our great union as National Trustee, Zone A,” the Kano State NLC deputy governorship candidate said.

He said his years in the NUJ had been a remarkable journey of service, struggle, friendship and solidarity.

“I remain eternally grateful to the comrades who stood with me through the years, shared both the challenges and victories, and made the journey worthwhile.

“As I embark on this new chapter, I carry with me the values and lessons of our comradeship. I may be leaving an elective position in the NUJ, but I am not leaving the brotherhood of comrades.

“May Allah guide our steps, bless our endeavours and grant us success in our collective pursuit of a better society,” Comrade Abbas added.
