From Muhammad Kabir, Kano
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained that they removed rsome Governorship Candidates names from the list of contenders for the 2027 elections over their parties’ failure to submit membership registers as required by the Electoral Act 2026.
In a released Tuesday night signed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said they followed strict guidelines to removed names of those who violated electoral laws.
According to the commission, the decision followed a Supreme Court judgment delivered on September 24, 2026, which affirmed that political parties must submit their membership registers before conducting valid primary elections.
INEC stated that the Supreme Court also affirmed that political parties that failed to comply with the requirement were not eligible to nominate candidates for the elections.
However, the commission noted that the lists of presidential and National Assembly candidates had already been published on September 12, 2026, 13 days before the Supreme Court delivered its judgment.
The statement added that political parties that believe their candidates were wrongly excluded from the list have 14 days to notify the commission and seek redress.
INEC said the deadline for submitting complaints would expire on October 24, 2026.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, compliance with the law and the conduct of credible elections in Nigeria
