Kano Tops Nigeria with 441,845 Newly Registered Voters, Report Shows

Kano State has emerged as the leading state in Nigeria in terms of newly registered voters, recording a total of 441,845 new registrations under the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise as of June 15, 2026.

According to a report presented by the Sub-Committee on ICT and Data Collection, Chairman Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu commissioner Livestock Development, Kano ranked first among the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reflecting growing political awareness and participation among its citizens.

The report attributed the achievement to sustained voter mobilization and public awareness campaigns initiated by the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. It noted that the state government established a Voter Registration Task Force Committee in 2025 to encourage residents, particularly young people, to register and participate in the democratic process.

Analysis of the registration figures revealed significant variations across the state’s 44 local government areas. Bichi Local Government Area recorded the highest number of registrations with 30,806 voters, followed by Kumbotso (18,701), Nasarawa (18,184), Dawaki Tofa (17,748), Bagwai (15,808) and Ungogo (15,584).

Conversely, the lowest registration figures were recorded in Kunchi (5,030), Warawa (5,462), Tsanyawa (5,597), Garun Malam (5,679) and Bunkure (5,699).

The report observed that voter registration was strongest in urban and semi-urban areas, particularly within the Kano metropolitan axis, while some rural local government areas recorded comparatively lower turnout. It further highlighted strong youth participation as a major driver of the impressive registration figures.

Describing Bichi’s performance as exceptional, the report stated that the local government accounted for approximately seven per cent of the state’s total registrations, underscoring the effectiveness of voter mobilization efforts in the area.

To sustain the momentum, the committee recommended intensified voter education and awareness campaigns in local government areas with low registration figures. It also urged local authorities to engage more youths and community volunteers in voter mobilization activities and work closely with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to facilitate the completion of biometric registration.

The report concluded that the registration of over 441,000 voters demonstrates the commitment of Kano residents to democratic participation and provides a strong foundation for electoral planning, demographic analysis and evidence-based governance.
