As workers across Kano State, Nigeria, and the world commemorate the 2026 International Workers’ Day, I extend my warm felicitations to the hardworking men and women whose dedication, resilience, and patriotism continue to drive the growth and development of our dear state.
Workers remain the backbone of every prosperous society. Their sacrifices, commitment, and invaluable contributions deserve not only celebration but also sustained recognition through policies and programmes that directly improve their lives and livelihoods.
It is in this regard that I strongly advocate for the annual observance of Workers’ Day in Kano State to serve as a strategic platform for reviewing the socio, economic achievements of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and assessing the direct impact of these strides on workers and the general populace.
Under the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State has witnessed unprecedented progress across critical sectors. His administration has remained steadfast in prioritizing workers’ welfare, youth empowerment, women inclusion, infrastructural renewal, and economic revitalization.
The prompt implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage, regular payment of salaries and pensions, and the settlement of over ₦32 billion out of inherited workers’ and pensioners’ liabilities stand as eloquent testimony to the Governor’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers.
Beyond labour matters, the administration has empowered women across the 44 local government areas, with 50,000 Naira each monthly, a process that is ongoing. It established 26 vocational and skills acquisition institutes to equip our youths with employable skills, and created thousands of job opportunities in strategic sectors, including health, agriculture, education, justice, and community security.
Notable among these are the recruitment of health personnel, agricultural support initiatives, the engagement of over 10,000 BESDA teachers, employment of state counsels, appointment of Sharia Court judges, and the recent recruitment of 2,000 Marshals under the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch.
Governor Yusuf’s massive infrastructural development projects have equally generated employment, stimulated local businesses, and improved service delivery across the state, thereby directly enhancing the quality of life of workers and citizens alike.
Workers’ Day, therefore, should transcend ceremonial celebrations. The day should be tagged “Gida Gida Kano First Good Governance Legacy Day” to become an annual scorecard day an opportunity for government to present its achievements, for workers to evaluate progress, and for citizens to collectively reflect on the journey toward greater prosperity.
Such a tradition will further strengthen transparency, deepen accountability, and reinforce the enduring partnership between government, workers, and the people.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has proven himself a responsive, compassionate, and people oriented leader whose policies continue to transform lives and reposition Kano State for sustainable growth and development.
As we celebrate this important day, I urge all workers to remain steadfast, productive, and supportive of the administration’s noble vision for a greater Kano.
Happy International Workers’ Day.
Long Live Kano Workers.
Long Live Kano State.
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
