From Muhammad Kabir Kano
The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has unveiled the Renewed Hope Cup: “The Game Changer”, an interstate football tournament designed to unite youths across Northern Nigeria while promoting peace, talent development and positive engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The tournament, which is scheduled to kick off next month, will feature 20 football clubs representing 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in a competition expected to attract widespread media coverage across the country through radio, television, online platforms and newspapers.
The Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Sani Musa Danja, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing held as part of activities leading to the official unveiling of the tournament.
Danja said the tournament was initiated to strengthen unity and interaction among northern youths by creating a platform where young people from different states could meet, compete and build lasting relationships through football.
According to him, the Renewed Hope Cup is also designed to promote social responsibility among youths by sensitising them against drug abuse, crime and other forms of criminality, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
He urged northern youths to approach the elections with a peaceful mindset, stressing the importance of maintaining peace before, during and after the polls to ensure credible and violence-free elections.
“The key message of this tournament is to sensitise our youths against crime and criminalities and to encourage them to embrace peace and positive engagement,” Danja said.
Beyond sports and youth mobilisation, the tournament will also provide an avenue for discovering emerging football talents. Danja said major stakeholders in the football industry, including European coaches and football marketers, are expected to attend the competition to scout for promising players and expose them to opportunities beyond the tournament.
The competition will progress through Group Stage, Knockout Stage and Grand Finale, with the final scheduled to take place at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Kano.
At the grand finale, the champions will receive a trophy and N10 million cash prize, while the runner-up will receive N5 million and the third-placed team will receive N2 million.
Danja said the prizes were intended not only to reward sporting excellence but also to encourage youth participation, economic self-reliance and productive engagement as alternatives to youth restivenes
He expressed appreciation to the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for approving the hosting of the tournament, describing it as part of the administration’s broader youth development agenda.
The Renewed Hope Cup is expected to combine football, youth empowerment, peace advocacy and talent discovery, positioning the tournament as a platform for building stronger relationships among young people across Northern Nigeria while encouraging them to contribute positively to society.
