Community Foils Alleged ₦10m Bribe, Exposes Suspected Drug Trafficking Operation in Kano

The Multi Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances in Kano State has commended the people of Bajallabe, around the FCE Gate 1 axis of Kano metropolis, for rejecting an alleged ₦10 million inducement and exposing a suspected drug trafficking operation in the community.
The commendation followed the discovery, in the early hours of Tuesday, of a Golf vehicle allegedly loaded with substances suspected to be illicit drugs and parked alongside a motorcycle near a residential building in the area.
According to the Task Force, residents who became suspicious of the development approached the driver and sought clarification about the contents of the vehicle.
During the encounter, the driver allegedly offered ₦10 million to community representatives and vigilante personnel in an attempt to have the matter overlooked.
The offer was reportedly rejected, with the community members insisting that the appropriate authorities be invited to investigate the matter and take necessary action.
The Chairman of the local vigilante group subsequently contacted the Multi Agency Task Force, while, as tension reportedly began to rise at the scene, he also alerted the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order.
Police personnel responded promptly and took custody of the suspected vehicle and the individuals involved, transferring them to the Rijiyar Zaki Police Division for further investigation.
Operatives of the Multi Agency Task Force are also at the scene and are working with the relevant authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the discovery are thoroughly investigated.
The Task Force stressed that the substances recovered from the vehicle are only suspected illicit substances, adding that their precise nature and status would be determined through appropriate investigation and, where necessary, laboratory examination.
Commending the community, the Chairman of the Multi Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Substances in Kano State, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, described the action of the residents and vigilantes as a demonstration of courage, vigilance and civic responsibility.
He said the refusal to compromise the investigation despite the alleged financial inducement showed that communities have a critical role to play in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
The Task Force also commended the Nigeria Police Force, Rijiyar Zaki Division, for its prompt response, noting that the decision by the community to involve law enforcement authorities rather than taking the law into its own hands was essential to maintaining peace and ensuring due process.
The Task Force further disclosed that, in line with the Executive Order recently signed by the Executive Governor of Kano State, the property where the suspected substances were discovered would be sealed, with other necessary measures taken in accordance with the provisions of the order.
The Task Force called on residents across Kano State to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities involving the trafficking, distribution, storage or sale of illicit drugs and other prohibited substances to the appropriate authorities.
It cautioned members of the public against confronting suspected offenders or taking the law into their own hands, stressing that credible information should be channelled through the relevant law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
The Task Force also urged traditional and religious leaders, market associations, youth organisations, vigilante groups, community development associations and other stakeholders to strengthen collaboration with government and security agencies in tackling drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
It said the Bajallabe incident had once again demonstrated that the fight against drug abuse was not the responsibility of government and law enforcement agencies alone, but a collective responsibility requiring active participation from communities.
The Task Force reaffirmed its commitment to working with communities across Kano State to build a safer, healthier and drug free society, assuring the public that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure proper investigation and the administration of justice.
