The Association of Surgeons of Nigeria (ASON) has elected a Consultant General Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist (Breast Surgeon) at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Dr. Abubakar Bala Muhammad, as its new Secretary General.
Dr. Muhammad was elected during the Association’s National Election held on Friday in Abuja, where surgeons from across the country gathered to elect members of the national executive council.
Speaking shortly after his election, Dr. Muhammad expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah and members of the Association for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to serve the Association with dedication, integrity and transparency, while working to promote unity and collaboration among surgeons across the country, irrespective of their areas of specialization.
According to him, strengthening cooperation within the profession will be key to advancing surgical practice and improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, an Oncology Registrar at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Tasiu Abdullahi, described Dr. Muhammad’s election as well deserved, saying it reflects the confidence Nigerian surgeons have in his leadership ability and professional competence.
He said Dr. Muhammad had consistently demonstrated commitment to the advancement of the surgical profession, adding that his emergence as Secretary General would further strengthen the Association.
Abdullahi also recalled that in July 2025, the American College of Surgeons, Nigerian Chapter, elected Dr. Muhammad as its Secretary General, describing the latest victory as another recognition of his outstanding leadership qualities.
He expressed confidence that the newly elected Secretary General would work with members of the Association to promote excellence in surgical practice and contribute to improving healthcare services across the country.
