Comrade Abbas Ibrahim has resigned as the National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone A, following his emergence as the Labour Party’s Deputy Governorship Candidate for Kano State.
Ibrahim announced his resignation in a statement on Tuesday, saying the decision was to enable him devote adequate time and energy to his new political responsibility.
He said the decision followed a period of personal reflection, adding that he had decided to participate more directly in politics and contribute his quota towards building a better society.
According to him, journalism, trade unionism and politics may be different platforms, but they provide opportunities to serve humanity, defend justice, promote the interests of the people and contribute to societal development.
“I am therefore stepping into this new responsibility with the same spirit of service, courage, commitment and comradeship that has guided my years in the NUJ and the labour movement,” he said.
Ibrahim said his resignation was conveyed at the NUJ National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Dutse, Jigawa State, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
He appealed to his colleagues and comrades to continue to support him with prayers and goodwill as he begins a new chapter of his public service.
“I remain your comrade, colleague and brother, and I sincerely hope that the bonds of comradeship built over the years will continue to endure, irrespective of the different paths we may take,” he said.
The former trustee thanked the NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, members of the NEC, his chairman, Comrade Suleiman Dederi, and his team for the confidence reposed in him and the opportunity to serve the union.
Reflecting on his years in the NUJ, Ibrahim described his experience as a journey of service, struggle, friendship and solidarity.
He said he remained grateful to colleagues and comrades who supported him through the challenges and achievements recorded during his time in the union and labour movement.
“As I embark on this new chapter, I carry with me the values and lessons of our comradeship. I may be leaving an elective position in the NUJ, but I am not leaving the brotherhood of comrades,” he said.
He prayed for Allah’s guidance and blessings in his new endeavour and expressed hope for success in the collective pursuit of a better society.
He ended by reaffirming his commitment to the NUJ, the labour movement and Nigeria.
