Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, Kauran Gwandu, has donated N100 million to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by insecurity in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area.
The Governor also pledged N10 million monthly to support community-based security efforts in Wasagu Chiefdom and promised to rehabilitate the Wasagu township road to improve accessibility, facilitate security operations and boost economic activities.
Governor Idris announced the interventions on Friday at the palace of the Chief of Wasagu during a sympathy visit to victims of recent bandit attacks in the area.
The visit was aimed at commiserating with the victims, reassuring residents of his administration’s commitment to their safety, and outlining measures to restore lasting peace.
The Governor said his administration would continue to collaborate with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to confront the security challenges in the area.
He stressed that protecting lives and property remains a shared responsibility requiring sustained cooperation between federal and state authorities, security agencies and local communities.
According to him, the proposed Forward Operating Base (FOB) would strengthen the operational presence of security personnel, improve response time and prevent further attacks in Wasagu and neighbouring communities.
“By the grace of Allah, we will ensure that the issue of the Forward Operating Base is addressed. We want to make sure that the security challenges confronting this area are tackled. If there is any gap or anything we need to know, please bring it to our attention so that we can work together to find a solution,” he said.
Governor Idris explained that the N100 million donation is intended to provide relief to displaced residents through food supplies and other essential items to ease their hardship.
He added that the N10 million monthly support would cover food and other logistics for personnel involved in community-based security operations.
The Governor urged residents to remain united, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could help prevent security threats.
He cautioned against politicising the security situation, noting that political differences and demonstrations alone would not resolve the challenges facing the communities.
He reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restore normalcy and create conditions for displaced residents to return safely to their ancestral homes and resume their livelihoods.
Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Alhaji Haliru Aliyu Wasagu, commended Governor Idris for prioritising security and providing logistical support to security agencies in the state.
He recalled that insecurity had affected the area for several years, forcing farmers to abandon their farmlands and disrupting economic and social activities. He noted, however, that government interventions had brought relief before the recent resurgence of attacks.
He called on residents to remain united and support security agencies, warning against attempts to exploit the situation for political purposes.
He commended traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders for their contributions to peacebuilding and support to affected families.
In their separate remarks, the Chief of Wasagu, Alhaji Muktar Musa, and the Chairman of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, Hon. Hussaini Aliyu Bena, thanked Governor Idris for the visit.
They described the proposed FOB, the monthly security support and the N100 million assistance as significant interventions that would help restore peace.
They appealed for sustained security operations, continued humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation of major roads, particularly the routes linking Wasagu and Bena.
They expressed optimism that improved security and road infrastructure would enable residents to return to their communities and resume farming and other economic activities.
