19 Year Old Sentence To Death For Killing Husband 9 Days After Marriage

A Kano State High Court has sentenced a 19-year-old woman, Saudat Jibrin, to death by hanging for the murder of her husband, Salisu Idris, just nine days after their wedding.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday by Justice Maryam Sabo, who held that the prosecution had proved the charge of culpable homicide against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.
“I hereby sentence Saudat Jibrin to death by hanging for culpable homicide. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge declared.
Jibrin, a resident of Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State, was arraigned on a one-count charge of culpable homicide.
The prosecution, led by Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told the court that the incident occurred on May 5, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano.
According to the prosecutor, at about 9:00 p.m., the defendant allegedly laced her husband’s “Zoho” drink with a harmful substance before slashing his throat with a knife.
He said the offence was committed just nine days after the couple got married.
The prosecution called two witnesses during the trial to establish its case against the defendant.
However, Jibrin denied the allegation and testified in her own defence.
Defence counsel, Abdulfatah Muhammad, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy, arguing that his client had undergone significant reformation while in custody.
Muhammad told the court that Jibrin had memorised the Holy Qur’an during her detention and appealed for leniency, noting that she is the first child of her parents and that her younger siblings depend on her.
The prosecution maintained that the offence contravened Section 221(a) of the Penal Code.
The court, however, found the defendant guilty and sentenced her to death by hanging. The judge also informed her of her right to appeal the judgment within 90 days
